Start now How sleep studies help you During a sleep study, a medical sleep specialist called a polysomnographer monitors your vital signs while you sleep. These readings provide insight into the quality of your sleep. The results are reviewed by a sleep medicine doctor who can determine if you have a sleep disorder. If a sleep disorder is diagnosed, your sleep medicine doctor will work with you to correct the problem.
