The Snowball Effect of Overmedicating in Older Adults

Many older adults take several medications to manage chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis. Over time, new prescriptions can be added to treat symptoms or side effects from other medications — and the list keeps growing. This is known as polypharmacy, and while it’s common, it can also create unintended risks.

Understanding the risks

Each medication may serve a purpose, but when taken together, drugs can interact in ways that increase side effects or reduce effectiveness. Older adults are especially vulnerable because the body processes medications differently with age.

Too many medications can lead to dizziness, confusion, fatigue and an increased risk of falls or hospitalization. It can also make it harder to manage schedules and doses correctly, leading to missed or duplicated medications.

Taking control of your medication list

One of the most effective ways to prevent complications is to review your medications regularly with your healthcare provider. A “medication review” allows your provider to look for duplications, unnecessary prescriptions or possible interactions between drugs and supplements.

To prepare:

  • Keep an updated list of all medications, including over-the-counter products and vitamins.
  • Bring the list to every appointment.
  • Ask if any medications can be simplified, combined or discontinued safely.

Managing fewer medications not only reduces side effects but also helps you feel more alert and in control of your health.

A simpler approach to medication management

Your medications should help you live well — not complicate your life. Regular reviews can ensure each one is truly necessary and beneficial.

A thoughtful medication plan can simplify your life and protect your health. Whether you’re managing multiple prescriptions or looking to reduce side effects, having a primary care provider who knows your full health history makes all the difference.
