William Waters IV, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer for Tanner Health System, is among the “100 Hospital & Health System CMOs to Know” for 2018, according to Becker’s Healthcare.
The list, released annually, features national physician leaders dedicated to strengthening their organizations through physician leadership development, patient safety initiatives and quality improvement.
As executive vice president and chief medical officer at Tanner, Dr. Waters serves in a dyad capacity alongside Bill Hines, the five-hospital health system’s chief administrative officer. Dr. Waters’ responsibilities include risk management, health information management, data and analytics, medical affairs and credentialing, and clinical operations including nursing, surgical services, cardiac services, cancer care, emergency services, infection prevention and more.
A third-generation physician with deep roots in urban Atlanta, Dr. Waters began at Tanner as the intensivist for Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton’s 12-bed ICU. Along with caring for patients, Dr. Waters began laying the groundwork for the evolution of Tanner Health System’s critical care services. His work proved essential in the development of many of the five-hospital health system’s other clinical services, including the launch and expansion of PCI services, a growing robotic surgery program, expanded cancer care and more. Dr. Waters’ role in developing Tanner’s clinical programs continued to grow when he was named executive vice president and chief medical officer for the system.
He is a 2006 recipient of the Georgia Hospital Association’s prestigious Hospital Hero Award.
The physicians featured on Becker’s list are proven leaders in the field with extensive clinical and team building experience. Many have held executive leadership positions at multiple hospitals and health systems, overseeing efforts to expand health IT, improve the patient experience and build an overall positive culture for their organizations.
The list was compiled through nominations and Becker’s editorial team selected CMOs and other equivalent titles through an editorial review process.
