Registration Open for Journeyman Farmer Program for Beginning Farmers
Thursday, February 17, 2022
Are you new to farming and looking to learn about sustainable agriculture practices?
Do you want to grow your own food and become more self-reliant?
If so, the University of Georgia Extension offices in Carroll and Paulding counties have a program just for you. The UGA Extension Office is working to develop the next generation of farmers in Georgia through the Journeyman Farmer Certification Small Fruit and Vegetable Program — a training program that provides education to beginning farmers.
The program is supported by the Beginning Farmer Rancher Development Program and hosted in partnership with Tanner Health System's Get Healthy, Live Well, the University of Georgia Small Business Development Center and the Georgia Farm Bureau.
Providing support to beginning farmers is part of a larger effort to increase the supply of fresh fruits and vegetables needed for healthy communities. The first part of the three-step training will begin on March 7 with a small farm business planning session.
Then, every Monday in March, participants will attend small fruit and vegetable production training. The third part will be an intern/mentorship opportunity.
All sessions will be at the Carroll County Agriculture-Education Center in Carrollton, with registration costing $50 per person. The deadline to register is Feb. 28, and spaces are limited.
Contact the Carroll County Extension Office at 770-835-8546 to register.
This work is supported by the West Georgia Regional Food System Collaborative Community Food Project grant no. 2017-33800-27051 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
