Tanner Offers New Class for Caregivers

Caring for a loved one who is ill or disabled can be stressful emotionally, financially and physically.

Research has found high rates of anxiety and depression among caregivers, as well as increased vulnerability to health problems. Caregivers frequently cite restriction of personal activities and social life as problems. They often feel they have no control over events, and that feeling of powerlessness has a significant negative impact on caregivers’ health.

That’s why Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well is offering a new class that will teach caregivers how to take care of themselves while taking care of their loved ones. Powerful Tools for Caregivers (PTC) is an evidence-based program that provides tools and strategies to better handle the unique challenges caregivers face. This program will provide caregivers with the tools to: reduce personal stress; practice self-care; communicate effectively with medical providers, family members or paid help; utilize community resources; make tough decisions; set goals; and solve problems.

It also provides caregivers with the tools to reduce anger, depression and guilt.

“Caregivers need to take care of themselves to be able to care for their loved ones,” said Clay Cowart, community outreach coordinator at Tanner’s Get Healthy, Live Well. “Get Healthy, Live Well is offering this program to help caregivers learn ways to manage stress and find resources.”

PTC is a six-week education program developed by Legacy Caregiver Services and Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging. The national program is sustained by extensive collaborations with community-based organizations.

If you care for a child, friend, neighbor or relative, this program is for you. Classes will meet on Mondays from Aug. 15 to Sept. 19, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  All classes are held at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton in Classroom 3.

Enrollment is limited, so register early. Register online at or call 770.812.9871.
