A powerful synthetic opioid 100 times stronger than morphine and 50 times stronger than heroine, fentanyl was initially developed to relieve pain in cancer patients or following surgery. Because of its strength, fentanyl is extremely addictive. Because the drug can easily be mixed with other street drugs to increase their potency, it’s being found as the cause of more overdose deaths. Fentanyl can slow breathing — and stop it altogether. The spread of the drug is seen both locally and nationally as a public health crisis.
