Getting Started Getting Fit

We all know we need to be more fit, but sometimes it’s hard to make positive changes in our lifestyles. That’s why Get Healthy, Live Well offers fun-to-use online tools that can get you motivated and on the right track.

Millie Grant, a project manager with Get Healthy, Live Well, understands that making changes can be challenging but she believes that using online fitness tools can help.

“The online fitness and nutrition tracking tools offer a more effective way to lose weight,” said Grant. “Studies have shown people who track their food intake and record their exercise daily can lose double the weight of their non-tracking counterparts.”

Currently, Get Healthy, Live Well is helping thousands of residents lose weight, exercise more and improve their nutrition with online tools. With the right information, support and motivation, Get Healthy, Live Well is helping people create lasting lifestyle changes.

According to Grant, the fitness tools are easy to use.

“People can participate at their own level of comfort,” she said. “They have the option to connect with ‘buddies’ if they need extra encouragement and there’s also a blog that lets them chronicle their own experiences.”

Using the free, online fitness and nutrition tracker, you can:

  • Log your exercise.
  • Keep a food diary.
  • Track your weight loss.
  • Calculate your BMI (body mass index).
  • Participate in local and regional exercise challenges.
  • Connect with friends and coworkers.
  • Share healthy recipes or encouraging messages.

These tools are offered for free as part of Get Healthy, Live Well and Tanner Health System’s response to rising obesity rates in the region.

“Over 30 percent of Georgians are overweight or obese, and the number is on the rise,” said Grant. “By using fitness and nutrition tracker programs like this, we can help participants pay attention to what they eat, how much they eat and how often they exercise.”

Although the program is designed to help people lose weight more effectively, it also helps the health system understand the people in this area better.

“This program is really for individuals, but it does help Tanner to know obesity trends and how to fine tune our programs to better fit our community,” said Grant.

Grant also invites us to check out the “Passport to Health” fitness and wellness challenge where “each month we explore different regions of the globe.  Last month was China, this month is Germany.  It’s full of fun challenges and classes that help you on your way to your fitness destination.”
