‘Healthy Historic Walks’ Set for June 18

Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well is inviting the community to exercise their bodies and minds by taking a walk through history this summer.

As part of its #SummerOfHealth campaign, Get Healthy, Live Well is taking healthy habits to the cities of Carroll and Haralson counties with Healthy Historic Walks led by local community leaders. The health walks will take participants through the streets of Bremen, Carrollton, Roopville, Villa Rica and Whitesburg. The walks, set for June 18, will begin at 9 a.m. in each community.

The walks will be led by Greater Haralson County Chamber of Commerce President Eric McDonald, Carrollton City Councilman Rory Wojcik, Roopville City Councilwoman Robin Worley, Villa Rica Community Development Director Janet Hyde and Whitesburg Public Library Branch Manager Ruth Fuller.

“These historic walks are part of Get Healthy, Live Well’s efforts to provide more opportunities for the community to get more physical activity,” said Phyllis Head, community liaison at Get Healthy, Live Well. “This is an event where good health and history intersect.”

Each city’s walking path has at least eight check points that hold historical relevance to the town and community.

“You’re really going to get a chance to see your community,” said McDonald. “It gives you a chance to see things that you missed that you may like. It’s a great walk for families.”

Wojcik encourages the community to come out and participate in Carrollton’s walk.

“Tanner's Historic Walk is a great way to get out and learn about the history of Carrollton while also getting a little exercise,” he said. “Carrollton is focused on pedestrian safety and we continue to enhance our city sidewalks to ensure that everyone can enjoy our wonderful community.”

The event not only provides a way to get more exercise, but offers the opportunity to learn about some important community sites like Bremen’s Sewell Mill Textile Museum and Bell’s Store in Roopville.

“We’re very proud of our little town,” said Worley. “It is an historic town and we’re excited to show it off to everyone.”

The Whitesburg Public Library is also promoting exercise and sports throughout the summer as part of its summer reading program, “Ready, Get Set, Read.”

“It’s good to know your town,” said Fuller. “Whitesburg has a wonderful history. Come on out and enjoy the fresh air and companionship. Walking is good for you. It’s good for me.”

The starting point for each walk is at the following locations:

·    Bremen City Hall — 232 Tallapoosa Street
·    Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton — 705 Dixie Street
·    Roopville Baptist Church — 18 Old Franklin Street
·    The Mill Amphitheater — 106 Temple Street, Villa Rica
·    Whitesburg Public Library — 800 Main Street
