Howard Among Becker’s ‘Nonprofit Hospital and Health System CEOs to Know’ for 2017

Tanner Health System President and CEO Loy Howard has been named among the nation’s top Nonprofit Hospital and Health System CEOs to Know for 2017 by Becker’s Hospital Review.

“The men and women on this list lead some of the largest and most successful nonprofit healthcare organizations in the country,” the publication reported with its publication of the list. “The Becker's Healthcare editorial team accepted nominations for this list and selected those included based on editorial judgment.”

Howard was among just three Georgia healthcare executives on the list, which also included Kevin Brown, CEO of Piedmont Healthcare, and John Haupert, CEO of Grady Health System.

Howard has served as president and CEO of Tanner for more than 20 years, growing the organization from a small two-hospital health system to a regional destination for health comprised of five hospitals and about 30 medical practices throughout six counties in Georgia and Alabama.

Howard has worked to dramatically expand Tanner’s cancer care services, cardiac services — now featuring two regional destinations for PCI treatment and two regional accredited chest pain centers in what remains a largely rural area — community wellness programs, inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services and more. He has also partnered with other community leaders to develop an innovative program to introduce county school students to careers at Tanner, help the University of West Georgia expand its nursing program with the Tanner Health System School of Nursing, and helped establish Tanner’s innovative Get Healthy, Live Well community health initiative, earning Tanner a 2016 Nova Award from the American Hospital Association.

Howard was a 2014 recipient of the Georgia Hospital Association Chairman’s Award and has been named among Becker’s 50 Rural Hospital CEOs to Know. He earned the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year award in 2008 and its Horizon Award in 2002, as well as the Visionary Award from the Follow Me Foundation in 2000 and the Community Service Award from the Abraham Baldwin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 2015.

Under his leadership, Tanner placed among Truven Health Analytics’ 15 Top Health Systems in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016, earned notice as one of the Best Places to Work in Healthcare from Modern Healthcare in 2007 and 2017, and was named one of the Best Places to Work in Atlanta by the Atlanta Business Chronicle eight times from 2006 to 2017. He was a 2014 recipient of the Georgia Hospital Association Chairman’s Award and has been named among Becker’s 50 Rural Hospital CEOs to Know.
