Knee Replacement

Knee replacement surgery  — also known as knee arthroplasty — removes the damaged parts of the knee joint replaces them with an artificial joint.

The procedure is used to relieve knee pain and discomfort in the knee.

Why would I need knee replacement surgery?

Degenerative joint conditions, such as arthritis, or undergoing a traumatic injury can cause you to experience severe and chronic pain, stiffness and swelling. These decrease your mobility and affect your quality of life.

If you are experiencing joint pain, replacement surgery may be an option for you if medication or conservative treatments — such as physical therapy — are no longer providing relief.

An orthopedic specialist can help determine if knee replacement is an option for you.

Types of knee replacement surgery

The knee is made up of three major parts: the thigh bone, shinbone and kneecap.

Depending on which part is damaged, surgeons can perform two primary types of replacement procedures. They are:

  • Total knee replacement: This procedure is performed when all three areas of the knee joint are affected and are replaced.
  • Partial Knee replacement surgery: A partial replace procedure is performed when only one part of the joint is affected and replaced.
