Eight Ways to Stay Healthy and Safe This Holiday Season

The holidays are a time to celebrate and connect with those we love, but they’re also a time to pay extra attention to your health and safety. Cold weather keeps us indoors, increases close contact and reduces sun exposure, which lowers vitamin D levels and helps viruses like strep throat and influenza spread. Plus, dry winter air also makes germs tougher.

All these factors mean it’s more important than ever to invest in your overall well-being and limit the spread of germs. Here are eight ways to keep every member of your family feeling their best this holiday season:

1. Wash your hands often

Hand hygiene is one of the simplest ways to stop germs. Illness spreads when we touch our eyes, nose or mouth after touching contaminated surfaces or objects. Proper handwashing has six steps: wet your hands, apply soap, rub your hands together to create a lather, scrub for 20 seconds, rinse your hands under warm water and dry with a clean towel or air dryer.

2. Eat healthy foods

Keep your diet on the “nice list” this year. Seasonal sweets are everywhere, so moderation is key. Drinks like hot chocolate, eggnog and flavored lattes can pack hundreds of calories. Balance treats with nutrient-rich foods. Add vegetables to popular dishes like stuffing and soup, and choose fruit-based desserts over those with excessive amounts of refined sugar.

3. Stay active

Relaxing with movies and curling up by the fireplace are important parts of the season, but don’t forget movement. Try ice skating, winter walks or scavenger hunts with kids. Indoors, consider a fitness class or home workout. Scheduling exercise, setting daily challenges or competing with family members can keep it fun and consistent.

4. Stay warm

Bundle up when you head outside. Multiple thin, loose-fitting layers work better than one bulky coat, and moisture-wicking fabric helps prevent chills. Cover your head, hands and feet, and if you’ll be outside for longer periods of time, stay fueled with high-energy foods, drink warm liquids and take shelter from wind when needed.

5. Travel safely

Before traveling, check your vehicle’s tires and top off all fluids. Pack an emergency kit with blankets, snacks, water, a flashlight and a portable phone charger. Stay alert when driving at night and take breaks if needed. Plan your routes, watch the weather and avoid posting travel details on social media. Ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your home, and use light timers for extra security.

6. Manage stress

Your mental and emotional health matter, too. Parties, shopping and obligations can feel overwhelming. Set realistic expectations, make time for yourself and remember that you don’t need to say “yes” to everything. Stick to your budget, keep up with healthy routines and talk openly about how you’re feeling, especially if you’ve recently experienced a loss.

7. Prioritize sleep

Amid holiday fun, rest often gets overlooked. Aim to go to bed and wake up at consistent times. A calming bedtime routine — like taking a bath, drinking tea or meditating — tells your body that it’s time to wind down. Limit heavy meals, alcohol, caffeine and screens before bed. Open blinds in the morning to let in daylight and help reset your internal clock.

8. Plan for the new year

A new year is a fresh start, but for some, it can feel overwhelming. Reflect on the past year’s highs and lows. Then, set realistic goals in areas like family, finances, wellness and work. Break larger goals into smaller steps and check in regularly to stay on track.
