Annual Physicals and Health Screenings

Staying healthy isn’t just about treating problems — it’s about preventing them. Annual physicals and health screenings help us catch issues early, monitor changes over time and create a plan that supports your lifestyle.

Whether it’s your first annual checkup or you’re getting back on track, understanding what to expect can make the visit feel smoother — and even empowering.

At Tanner, we make annual physicals straightforward, supportive and all about you. No confusing medical language. No rushed talks. Just clear guidance and care that fits your life.

What are annual physicals and health screenings?

An annual physical is your yearly check-in with us — a dedicated visit focused on your overall health. We chat about your medical history and habits, conduct a full-body exam, check important numbers like blood pressure and weight, and discuss next steps based on your age, risks and goals.

Think of it as a yearly reset. A time to ask questions, raise concerns and plan for feeling your best in the coming year.

A health screening is a specific test that looks for certain conditions before symptoms start. This might include checking cholesterol or blood sugar, scheduling a mammogram or colon cancer screening, or completing a mental health questionnaire.

Your annual physical gives us the full picture. Screenings help us zoom in. Together, they form a preventive care plan tailored just for you.

What happens during an annual physical?

We start with the basics.

We check blood pressure, heart rate, temperature and breathing. We measure height and weight to monitor changes over time. These simple numbers can tell us a lot — sometimes even before you notice symptoms.

We talk about you.

This is a conversation, not an interrogation. We’ll review medications, allergies and medical history. We’ll also ask about sleep, stress, nutrition, physical activity and mental well-being. The goal? To understand your day-to-day life so we can recommend screenings and next steps that truly fit.

We complete a physical exam.

Your provider will listen to your heart and lungs, check your abdomen, look at your ears and throat, examine your skin and assess strength and movement. Depending on your age and needs, that may also include breast, pelvic or prostate exams. We’ll review vaccinations and update any that are due.

We decide on labs — together.

Not everyone needs blood work every year. If testing is recommended, it’s based on your health history and risk factors — not a one-size-fits-all checklist. Some labs can be done the same day. If not, we’ll explain exactly what’s needed and why.

Care at every stage of life

Adults

Annual physicals help adults stay ahead of common concerns like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and certain cancers. We’ll review which screenings make sense for you this year and update recommended vaccines.

Children and teens

Well visits for children and teens track growth, development and vaccinations. We also check vision, hearing and emotional well-being. Sports physical? We can take care of that, too.

Older adults

As we age, visits may focus more on balance, bone health, memory, hearing and medication safety. Screenings and vaccines are personalized based on overall health and goals.

No matter your age, your care plan should feel thoughtful — not overwhelming.

Getting ready for your visit

To make the most of your appointment, bring:

  • Medications and supplements
  • Your ID and insurance card
  • Any recent test or vaccine records that are not in MyChart
  • Home blood pressure or blood sugar readings, if you track them
  • Questions you don’t want to forget

If labs are scheduled, follow any fasting instructions. Wear comfortable clothing. Arrive a few minutes early so you’re not rushed.

Most importantly, come ready to talk. This visit is all about you.

After your exam: What comes next?

We’ll review your results in plain language and explain what they mean. If something needs follow-up, we’ll walk through next steps together. An out-of-range number doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong — it simply helps guide the plan.

If specialty care is needed, we’ll help coordinate it. You’ll leave knowing what to do next and when to check back in.

Why choose Tanner for your annual physical? Because preventive care should feel personal.

At Tanner:

  • We keep it clear. Straight answers. No medical jargon.
  • We listen first. Your goals matter.
  • We personalize your plan. No cookie-cutter checklists.
  • We make it convenient. Locations close to home and coordinated follow-up care.

Your annual physical isn’t just another appointment. It’s a simple, smart step toward staying healthy — and we’re here to make it feel that way.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an annual physical take?
Most visits last 20 to 40 minutes, depending on your needs and whether labs or vaccinations are done the same day.

Do I need an annual physical if I feel healthy?
Yes. Many conditions — like high blood pressure or high cholesterol — don’t cause symptoms early on. A yearly checkup helps us catch concerns early and keep preventive care up to date.

Will I always need blood work?
Not necessarily. We recommend labs based on your age, health history and past results. We’ll decide together what makes sense.

Can a virtual visit replace an annual physical?
Virtual visits are helpful for reviewing history and medications, but they can’t replace the hands-on parts of an exam. Sometimes a mix of virtual and in-person care works best.

What if I’m nervous?
Tell us. We’re happy to explain each step, answer questions and move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Warmer weather means more time outdoors, which also means more chances to encounter snakes. Most snakes you’ll see are harmless and prefer to avoid people. But some species are venomous, and a bite can become a medical emergency.
