Report of End of Year Net Assets

As a community-based, nonprofit healthcare organization, Tanner Health System operates for the good of the communities we serve.

When people choose our nonprofit health system for care, the benefit goes not to a group of shareholders, but to our local communities in the form of new facilities and services, expanded access to care and programs that improve overall health and wellbeing.

The Georgia Hospital Association, using 2017 data — the most recent available — has characterized the economic impact of Tanner Health System as:

  • Contributing more than $946.7 million in revenue to the local economy
  • Incurring more than $40 million in uncompensated costs to provide indigent care, charity care, other free care and bad debt expenses to the residents in the system’s service area
  • Creating 8,861 full-time jobs in west Georgia; and the Alabama Hospital Association reports another 221 full-time jobs created in east Alabama for a total of more than 9,000 full-time jobs

Like all hospitals, Tanner Health System faces financial obstacles including declining reimbursements, losses treating Medicaid and uninsured patients. Despite these pressures, Tanner Health System continues to thrive – enabling continued reinvestment in our charitable mission.
